It involves the integration of electronic components such as transistors, resistors, capacitors and other components into an integrated circuit on a sheet of mainly silicon and other semiconductor materials.

The development of the IC industry plays an important role in enhancing performance, transparency and reduction of the size of electronic devices. The applications of microchips range from mobile phones, personal computers, tablets to medical devices, automobiles and telecommunication systems.

IC specialists usually have in-depth knowledge of electronic circuit design, simulation techniques, signal processing, manufacturing processes and circuit tests. They use CAD (Computer-Aided Design) tools for circuit design and analysis, and have knowledge of hardware description languages (HDL) such as Verilog and VHDL.
